Phase One Lens Test
Almost 3 years after my last medium format lens test I decided to do new one with more Phase One Mount lenses and at different test distance.
Camera: Phase One DF
Digital Back: Leaf Aptus 75
Tripod: Manfrotto 055XPROB
Tripod Head: Manfrotto 486 MG
Self Timer: 10 sec
Distance: 2 meter /200mm f2.8 APO and 300mm f2.8 APO lens were shot with extension tube due to minimum focus distance bigger than 2m /
Settings: ISO50, Aperture Mode
Focus Mode: Manual focus lenses were focused with focus confirmation on camera. Every shot was checked on 100% on camera and refocus after this. Best of 4 shots was chosen for each lens. /I didn’t use autofocus since it is quite inaccurate in low light condition with busy backgrounds/
Test Target: Distance to from camera was 2.0 meters and target have Arial fonts with sizes from 1 to 30
All lenses were tested with 4 shoots, and from following lenses I have 2 copies each:
– Schneider Kreuznach 80mm LS f/2.8 ; Mamiya 80mm AF f2.8 ; Mamiya 150mm AF f3.5
All copies have given same result.

Here are individual photos showing sharpness and bokeh of All Mamiya / Phase one / Schneider Kreuznach lenses:
Click on link below the images to see them in full resolution.
Premier league:
Mamiya 80mm f4.0 MF Serial Number: 10186 – Sharpness: 10 Bokeh: 6 (C Version)
Sharpest lens at 2 meter test distance.
Maybe best value for money from all lenses in my test. Real bargain for around 100$.
It was also among 2 best lenses on 1meter test distance in my previous test: https://t-e-o.net/mamiya-645-and-phase-one-lens-test/
Schneider Kreuznach 80mm AF LS f/2.8 Serial Number: PK001400 – Sharpness: 10 Bokeh: 7 (2 copies tested) – MTF for Schneider Kreuznach 80mm f/2.8 LS Schneider Kreuznach 80mm f2.8 LS Specifications
Standart 80mm lens, with generally same sharpness as old 80mm AF lens but a bit less chromatic aberrations which is giving it slight advantage.
Mamiya 80mm AF f2.8 Serial Number: SK1723 – Sharpness: 10 Bokeh: 7
Great standard lens almost as good as much newer and more expensive Schneider Kreuznach 80mm LS f/2.8.
Mamiya 24mm f4.0 MF Fisheye N Version Serial Number: 11096 – Sharpness: 10 Bokeh: 2 (C Version)
Really, really sharp lens. Much sharper than moder Schneider Kreuznach 28mm LS.
For some reason though it give yellow tint on whole photo. I ensured that integrated filters are rotated to neutral, but yellow tint stayed.
It is hard to say if camera was unable to judge properly white balance in room, as other fisheye lens was giving also a bit yellowish result.
Schneider Kreuznach 75-150mm AF-D LS f/4-5.6 Serial Number: BJ1062 – Sharpness: 9 Bokeh: 7
Amazing that Phase One was able to make so sharp zoom lens and especially in most used range.
Of course this is reflected in lens price and also its size. It can be barery hold in size due its huge diameter. And it have 95mm filter size.
On 150mm is tad sharper than on 75mm, but still amazing performer.
Phase One 150mm f2.8 AF-D Serial Number: HH3025 – Sharpness: 9 Bokeh: 9
Top portrait lens with great bokeh. Actually this is lens which have highest score of all lenses for sum of Sharpness and Bokeh score.
Maybe only Phase One lens which I would want to have in Blue Stripe variant.
Phase One 120mm f4.0 Macro D /Manual Focus/ Serial Number: HE3026 – Sharpness: 9 Bokeh: 7 (D Version) – MTF for Phase One / Mamiya 120mm Macro Phase One 120mm f/4 D Macro MF Specifications
Phase One 120mm f4 Macro is great lens with top sharpness, but even it fall into usual portrait focal length, I am avoiding it using it for portraits due to its harsh bokeh.
Phase One 120mm Macro f4 MF AF-D
Very Good:
Schneider Kreuznach 40-80mm AF LS f/4.5-5.6 Serial Number: C00013 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 6
Another well done modern zoom from Schneider Kreuznach.
It looks that Phase One have asked for cost no object wide medium format zoom and Schneider have delivered it.
Lens which I tested is one of Phase One Samples Lens which was later sold to customer
Schneider Kreuznach 55mm AF LS f/2.8 Serial Number: PL002565 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 6 Schneider was able to improve a lot over older Mamiya lenses on 55mm focal distance.
Mamiya 150mm AF f3.5 Serial Number: TK1225 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 8 (2 copies tested)
Unfortunately sharpness here is not saying everything. Mamiya 150mm f/3.5 is suffering from chromatic aberations wide open, so recommended to be used from f5.6 and above.
Mamiya 55mm AF f2.8 Serial Number: SI1117 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 6 (non D version)
Phase One 45mm f2.8 AF-D Serial Number: PE001024 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 5
Mamiya 105-210mm AF f4.5 Serial Number: DE1022 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 9 (non D version)
Quite surprisingly old zoom is keeping on par with more modern lenses with very good sharpness.
Be aware that only some Serial Numbers / Firmware Versions of this lens work with Phase One Bodies.
In past Phase One was offering chip change to newer firmware for this lens as it is not re-flashable, but I doubt if this is still the case.
Mine is serial number: DE1022
Schneider Kreuznach 110mm AF LS f/2.8 Serial Number: PM002023 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 8
Great Portrait lens even a bit behind in both sharpness and bokeh compared to Phase One 150mm f2.8.
And also for Portraits I generally prefer Zeiss 110mm f2.0 with its creamy bokeh, even it is not so sharp and manual focus only.
Mamiya 210mm AF f4 Serial Number: SJ1132 – Sharpness: 9 Bokeh: 9
Very sharp and great value telephoto lens. Quite better than its 150mm f3.5 subling.
Mamiya 45mm AF f2.8 Serial Number: CI1034 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 5 (non D version)
Good:
Mamiya 35mm AF-D f3.5 Serial Number: CB1064 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 5
Sharpness of 35mm is no very bad, but not amazingly good either. And there are some chromatic aberrations too.
Mamiya 35mm MF f3.5 Serial Number: 110103 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 5
Absolutely same performance as 35mm AF Mamiya lens.
Schneider Kreuznach 28mm AF LS f/4.5-5.6 Serial Number: PW001054 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 2
Least performing Schneider Kreuznach Leaf Shutter lens. Cannot even touch sharpness levels of Mamiya 24mm fisheye.
Mamiya 55-110mm AF f4.5 Serial Number: BJ1062 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 7 (non D version)
Not so bad results from old cheap medium format Zoom Lens.
It is much sharper at 55mm than 110mm.
Generally I would prefer to use prime lenses instead of slow zoom with not so great quality.
Average:
Mamiya 110mm MF f2.8 Serial Number: 100859 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 8
Good portrait focal length, but sharpness is on average level.
Mamiya 55mm MF f2.8 Serial Number: 151126 – Sharpness: 6 Bokeh: 6
Not very sharp lens.
Hartblei Tilt Shift 45mm MF f3.5 Serial Number: 0091 – Sharpness: 5 Bokeh: 5
Quite a disappointing results from otherwise very expensive Harblei Tilt Shift 45mm lens.
I have done 8+ re-focus and shot tries but didn’t get better result than this photo.
Harblei Tilt Shift 45mm f3.5 MF
Zeiss 110mm f2.0 /Hasselblad V/ Serial Number: 6076497 – Sharpness: 6 Bokeh: 9 (F Version) – MFT for Zeiss 110/2.0 Zeiss 110mm f2.0 Specifications
One of my favourite medium format portrait lenses. And fastest for its focal length. Not sharpest lens around but for portraits this is not always disadvantage.
Combined with creamy bokeh it provide amazing results in real world.
Mamiya 80mm MF f1.9 Serial Number: 18570 – Sharpness: 5 Bokeh: 7 (N Version)
Old favourite for all around lens but sharpness is not on level of Schneider Kreuznach 80mm LS f/2.8 or Mamiya 80mm f/2.8 lenses.
And bokeh is not as good as one of Zeiss 110mm f/2.0 Lens.
But still not bad portrait lens with better bokeh than other f2.8 lenses shorter than 150mm.
Mamiya 150mm MF f2.8 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 9
Good and cheap portrait lens, but quite a hard to nail focus with manual focus.
Mamiya 150mm MF f3.5 Serial Number: 16864 – Sharpness: 6 Bokeh: 9 (2 copies tested)
Quite average lens, better one to go for Mamiya 150mm AF f/3.5 lens.
Mamiya 200mm APO MF f2.8 Serial Number: RC1138 – Sharpness: 7 Bokeh: 9
Same situation as with 300mm APO f/2.8 lens.
Due to minimum focus distance bigger than 2 meters I have to use extension tube.
And because telephoto lens were designed and calculated for best results at infinity result here at /below/ minimum focal distance is not showing real quality of this lens in real life.
Mamiya 300mm APO MF f2.8 Serial Number: 100007 – Sharpness: 8 Bokeh: 9 (tested with extension tubes and showing a bit weaker result at minimum distance)
Unfortunately test result of 300mm here was not showing its real capabilities. As it minimum focal distance is 3.5 meters I have to use it with extension tubes.
Also super-tele photo lenses are generally designed for infinity results at minimum /below mininimum/ focal distance was not very good.
Otherwise it comfortably compare with Nikkor 200mm f2.0 VR AF-S and some day I will have to do separate test between them.
One interesting thing is that mine lens is Very Low Serial Number 100007. So it is just 7th 300mm f2.8 lens ever manufactured by Mamiya.
Maybe if some day I become a lens collector this will be my first valuable piece.
Poor:
Russian Projector Lens Arsenal 35KP 140mm MF f1.8 Serial Number: 8600240 – Sharpness: 2 Bokeh: 10
Only if it was bit sharper Arsenal 140mm f1.8 was going to be dream lens.
Russian Projector Lens 35KP 140mm MF f1.8 specially converted with focus helicoid.
It cover medium format 48×36 sensor without vignetting at 2 meter distance.
I will have to search for other projector lenses covering medium format at infinity.
Russian Arsat 30mm f3.5 Fisheye Serial Number: 940116 – Sharpness: 1 Bokeh: 1
Very very bad lens wide open. If you need this to shot at f3.5 you have better chance to achieve good photos with peephole lens.
I hope that my test have helped you to choose best suited for you Phase One and Mamiya 645 Lenses.
Thank you! This is an incredible resource you have created. I just purchased my first Phase One camera and thanks to you I already know every lens I want to purchase this year.
