Telephoto portraits with 400mm f2.8 Lens

Few weeks ago I did small seminar on Wildlife Photography in London.

I choose Richmond Park as location for this as it is maximum close to wild location, and still with 100% chance that we can see and do photos of wild animals.

After we did all the talking and photos we did also photos of animals and I decide to do few portraits of people which were participating in seminar.

All photos taken with:

Camera: Nikon D850

Lens: Nikkor 400mm f2.8 VR

All on wide open aperture of f2.8

400mm f2.8 have great sharpness and amazing bokeh, but it turn out that communicating with models is quite difficult.

All photos were taken from 10-15 meter distance, so I have to either scream or just show with hands people to move.

But holding 5kg+ combo of 400mm telephoto lens and camera in one hand and showing with other hand was not easy task.

I usually use my Gitzo Monopod with such heavy lenses but it is perfectly hand handable for 10-15 minutes of shooting.

Other factor when shooting people with such long lens was that I was not able to control backgrounds so well as with normal lens.

As usually I would say to models “Move here” or “a little bit on left” but with 15meter distance between photographer and model it is quite hard to give directions.

And I didn’t even try to do full body portraits, as this would have required 20-30 meter distance, and zero chance of communication and directing models.

So conclusion is that even if lens have amazing sharpness, great bokeh it is suitable for portait work only with experience models who know how to pose.

There were amazing costumes and when one have chance to photograph outside of crowd amazing results can be achieved.

This photo particularly is done with Nikkor 105mm f1.4 shot at f1.4!

Fit Young Girl Showing Beach Ready Body here and great smile.

Police didn’t mind to have selfies with people and especially young girls.

This for sure is photo to remember for the guy.

Trucks with different music were helping for good mood.

All sexy girls dancers were in beautiful and colorful makeup.

Amazingly beautiful and sexy young black dancers.

I receive curse for making this photo but was worth it.

Today I decide to share with you my photographer kit for travel photography.

And especially for 20 days trip in Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica.

First – Action Camera.

No canyoning, zip line or diving can be photographed well without action camera.
So here it is my Choice

Unfortunately its low light capabilities are pretty limited and I only dream for moment when there will be action cameras with ass good sensors as on last iPhone.
Also Go Pro Hero 4 is draining batteries very fast, so this is why I have 3 spare batteries.
I’m usually using its mode to make videos and take photo every 5 seconds, so in end I have both photos and Videos.
And also Chinese made Seiwei USB charger  with two slots, which if needed I can charge from my powerbanks.
Two extra memory cards finish the Action Kit.

Next are my communication devices and used for fast snaps.

One of the main thing which I use iPhone for photography purposes is to create TimeLapses.

As with DSLR this will eat a lot from shutter life.
And also iPhone is waterproof so no problem to take photos on beach or even in water.

And here it is my DSLR Nikon D850 with 14-24mm f/2.8 Lens and Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens.

I always take two extra batteries, extra card and in this case also Chinese made Seiwei USB charger  with two slots, which if needed I can charge from my power banks.

If you wonder about the gab between these two lenses, it turn out that while travelling I very rarely use anything in 24-70mm diapason.

I prefer either ultra wide or telephoto.

Even Nikon D850 have amazing Low Light capabilities I will still take my trusty tripod replacement or mini sand bag.

As it is very useful to put camera at right angle on some rock or railing.

Here are action and camera kit together:

I forget to mention above that when travelling I always have on camera attached smart port Di-GPS Eco Professional M.

It is logging GPS data directly into photos, doesn’t consume lot of battery and it is very fast in obtaining GPS data.

Previously I was using Bluetooth GPS receiver for camera, but this was draining battery very fast.

You will easily say that this doesn’t look like camera bag and you are right.
This is only internal camera padding which I put inside my trekking backpack Mammut Nirvana Pro.

So this leave me lot of space for hike accessories: Jacket, Water, Food, poles and so on.

Travel Photographer Power Banks, Charges and Cables

Here are my Power Sources.

Two Universal Travel Adapters, one with two USBs, additional iPhone Charger.

Two Power Banks, one can be charged from sun and used as portable light where other is pocket size RavPower 3350mAh with ultra short lighting cable to charge iPhone in pockets.

Also 5 meter lighting cable which is very useful in hotels to use iPhone or iPad when they are being charged from usually hidden power sockets in hotel rooms.

I have forgotten to add in previous photos of my Spudz Cleaning Cloth for camera and also Welltop Waterproof GoPro Floating Handle Grip.

Which is very useful if you want to take your room key or money with you while diving or snorkeling.

Some photos which I earlier today /25.01.2016/ at Ace Cafe London, where there was car night event – in this case Porsche night.

Almost get late for this nice event, but decided to try to reach Ace Cafe later that to miss this nice event.

People were starting to go away but still it was possible to take few nice photos of this greatly looking Porsches.

Amazing Porsche Night in Ace Cafe London.

Street lights were really helping Porsches to look beautiful!

This Porsche was obviously driven in mud as visible on tires.

There was light fog and drizzling bus till great cars around.

On 10.10 there was world Zombie Day in London. You can see some of the photos which I take today, but if you are scared of zombies close this page immediately and don’t look further down.

For Zombie and Horror movies fans this is a must do event! Walking dead in real is very hard thing to see.
Makeup of all participants was class leading and more real looking than some of Holywood movies!

Notting Hill Carnival London

Great weather,  Music,  Joy and something which is highly recommended to visit, if you are coming to London in August.
It is always fun and I have visited it in 4 years in row.

It is great that people are happily posing for photos, especially if you carry respective Photo Equipment.

Some people were making photos with phones of course.

And numerous selfies of Instragram Kifla’s

Fun is the most important part of festival.
But of course don’t forget to use clothes ready to be painted in numerous colors.

Some people have smoked too much

There were people in traditional African appeal.

Unfortunately Quite a lot of rubish is left after Carnival.

Various cocktails were offered to Carnival Visitors

Here you can see moment of paint fights which are typical for Carnival.

Really sad to see such thing on Street for someone just to save 50p for toilet. Notting hill carnival peeing.

And it was not the only case unfortunately.. Notting hill carnival pee on streets.

There were real fires for food preparation, not microwave ovens.

Millions of people are visiting carnival each year!

Notting hill festival is place where you can meet your dream or devil.

Time to say good Bye again to carnival

All people were having lot of fun at Notting hill festival.

It was great carnival which I enjoy a lot and I’m looking forward for next year 50 anniversary of largest street carnival in Europe!
